Port Freeport RORO Operations

Global carriers offering roll on roll off (“RORO”) cargo services at Port Freeport are Hoegh Autoliners, Glovis, NYK, Grimaldi, Siem Car Carriers and Sallaum Lines. APS Stevedoring, Ports America and Red Hook Terminals provide stevedoring operations for the various RORO vessels calling Port Freeport.

Many of the RORO vessels calling the port have reinforced ramps and increased overhead clearance, allowing them to deliver high and heavy equipment as well as project cargo on Mafi trailers. Large cranes and construction equipment, containers and conventional breakbulk cargo have been arriving on these vessels, proving their versatility to move all types of cargo.

In March of 2024, Volkswagen Group of America opened a new 120-acre finished vehicle processing center, combining their Gulf Coast marine and rail operations at Port Freeport. APS Stevedoring stevedores the vessels delivering the VW product and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Services processes the finished vehicle units delivered to the port. VW affiliated brands such as Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley are also processed at this facility. The port handled 162,239 vehicle units in its 2024 fiscal year, which was a 78% increase from the previous year.

We were delighted to find that the responsiveness and can-do attitude of Port Freeport matched our own, as well as those of other key supply chain partners. As a result, we were able to develop a viable solution for RORO traffic into and out of Port Freeport that has forever changed the complexion of network design in North America. A customer-centric port in a business-friendly state made a tremendous difference in expediting development. Together, we have built an exceptional gateway with Port Freeport.
