Here you will find answers to some of the frequently asked questions about Port Freeport.

For unescorted access, yes, you need a TWIC. You can click this link to get more information about obtaining your TWIC. If you do not have a TWIC, you will need to be escorted by a certified Port Freeport TWIC Escort. Please contact your host contact to get further information.
 
Answer: Individuals requesting access to Port Freeport must present valid government issued photo identification.  Foreign nationals will need to present a valid passport to access port facilities.  Please reference the Port Freeport Security Guidelines document for further details.

Answer: In Texas, flying a drone over critical infrastructure facilities below 400 feet without authorization is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine (Texas Government Code423.0045). You must gain pre-authorization from Port Freeport Protective Services prior to flying a drone at Port Freeport. Click here for further information.

The maximum draft in the Freeport Harbor Channel is 56 feet from the Pilot Station to Seaway Marine Terminal and 51 feet from Seaway Marine Terminal to Velasco Container Terminal, then 26 feet from Velasco Container Terminal to Upper Stauffer Channel. 

There are no air draft restrictions from the Pilot Station to the Upper Stauffer Channel. 

Except for bunkering operations and occasional layberths, Port Freeport’s public docks only handle dry cargo vessels i.e. container ships, RORO vessels, bulk and multipurpose vesselsThe private terminals along the Freeport Harbor Channel receive liquid bulk vessels. 

Berths 1, 2, 3 and 5 have a maximum draft of 36 feet. 

Berths 6, 7 and 8 have a maximum draft of 51 feet.

Port Freeport has two post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes located at Velasco Terminal.  These cranes can lift 65 tons at the spreader and 75 tons under the hook and have an outreach of 18 across. 

Two additional super post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes will be delivered, commissioned and ready for service before the end of 2025.  These cranes will have an outreach of 23 across.

Port Freeport no longer has a deep hole suitable for loading or discharging semi-submersible vessels. 
You have the option to contract your own labor and negotiate directly with any of the locally licensed stevedoring companies (union and/or non-union).  Here is a link to ourDirectory.

Cross-Dock #1 offers refrigerated transloading and storage services.  For rates and more information, please contact Gulf Stevedoring Services.   

Cross-Dock #2 will be available early 2027 and offer agricultural inspections and frozen storage.
